More about Alistair Hendry
Alistair has no known grave but is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial. On 27th September 1917 he volunteered to go out and find a company of Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders with whom his battery had lost touch for 48 hours. He succeeded in his mission, coming upon them when they had fire their last round and given up hope. Afterwards he and six other infantry officers took cover in a German dug-out, where they were all killed instantly by the bursting of a shell. For this service Lt Hendry was mentioned in despatches. (Arbroath Roll of Honour, page 140).

CARNOUSTIE OFFICER KILLED IN ACTION.
Mrs Hendry, The Bruce Hotel, Carnoustie, has received information that her youngest son, Lieutenant Alistair Hendry, Royal Field Artillery, has been killed in action.
Lieut. Hendry, who was well known in the burgh, enlisted in the Black Watch during the early days of the war, and saw much service at the front, where he was wounded. Later he received a commission in the R.F.A., and returned to the fighting line a few weeks ago.
An elder brother, Charles P. Hendry, died suddenly in India six weeks ago. A third brother holds a commission in the army.
Lieut. Hendry, who previous to enlistment, was a clerk with James Smieton & Sons, Limited, was well known in local sporting circles, being exceptionally good tennis player.
