More about Arnold James Goudie
For reasons unknown Arnold is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour, but is remembered on St. Stephens Church, Broughty Ferry Roll of Honour.
Arnold was the brother of Sgt Samuel Herbert Goudie 225273, 10th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders, who died of wounds 07.12.1916.
His father Samuel served as Honorary Sherriff Substitute for Forfarshire.
Private, 12042, South African Infantry, 4th Regiment.
Missing in action, presumed killed, in the 2nd Battle of the Somme 24th March 1918. At that point in WW1 the Allies were actually losing the war and were in retreat. The battle at Marrieres Wood in which Arnold Goudie lost his life was in fact a rearguard action fought by the South African Infantry in an attempt to delay the advance of the German troops. An urgent withdrawal was ordered and so no wounded could be taken out. Similarly, bodies were never recovered after this battle and those killed have no known grave. Because of this they are commemorated instead on panels dedicated to the South African Infantry as part the huge Memorial at Pozieres Military Cemetery nearby, at Albert, Departement de la Somme, Picardy, France.
Awarded 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal
