BIRKHILL MAN IN THE SCOTTISH HORSE
IS KILLED AT THE DARDANELLES.
The first fatality in the ranks of the Scottish Horse amongst Dundee and district men is reported in Birkhill that Lance-Corporal Arnott Chalmers was killed at the Dardanelles on the 7th of September.
He had just returned from duty in an observation trench near the Turkish position when a shrapnel shell burst near him. He was wounded in the head by a piece of shrapnel, and lived only about two hours. Lance-Corporal Chalmers, who was 21 years of age, was a well-known local amateur singer.
