Before he enlisted in the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders he was employed in a Dundee bank. During his Army service in the 14th Battalion of the A&S Highlanders (Number 13148) he was promoted to Lance Corporal. He attended the Number 20 Officer Cadet Battalion based at Fleet in Hampshire.
