More about Bertram Howard Wodeman

Bertram H Wodeman was the son of the Revd H Woodman of St Peter’s Vicarage, Stockton on Tees and joined the Royal Navy as a Clerk in 1893. He changed his name to Wodeman in 1912. During his service he was appointed to HM Ships Edgar, Camperdown, Alexandra, Talbot, Nile, Magnificent, Benbow, Waterwitch, Pyramus, Torch, Furious and Implacable. In March 1912 he was appointed to HMS Vulcan, the Home Fleet Submarine Depot Ship based in Dundee as a Staff Paymaster. His reports state that he was a keen sportsman and spoke French and Spanish. On the outbreak of war he was promoted to Fleet Paymaster and appointed to the newly built battleship Benbow serving in her during the Battle of Jutland and until his death in March 1918 when he was reported as missing overboard. His service in HMS Camperdown was shortly after the famous collision with HMS Victoria but, by coincidence, the Royal Naval Reserve Sea Training Centre in Dundee from 1970 to 1994 was also named HMS Camperdown.
