Clarence initially served as a Guardsman with the Scots Guards before transferring to the Royal Engineers.
On 14.3.17 he was ordered to join GHQ W/T School in France (Compagne les Hea… unreadable), then on 17.3.17 he joined the Wireless Depot Coy at GHQ and finally on 3.5.17 joined No 2 Army Wireless Coy in the field.  Job description:  Interpreter/Operator Wireless.  Clarence served in France, Belgium and Germany from 3.10.16 to 15.12.18 as an Infantryman and Listening Post Interpreter.  He was reported missing in 1918 and returned to England on 1.1.19 having been released from the German POW Camp.
He suffered from recurring dysentry from May 1918 caused by malnutrition whilst a POW of the Germans.  He was hospitalised in POW hospitals in Ramecourt, France and Friedrichsfeld in Germany.
