David A. Henderson   1530   Australian Expeditionary Force

DUNDEE AUSTRALIAN KILLED AT DARDANELLES.

A Dundee member of the Australian Expeditionary Force operating at the Dardanelles is reported killed in action.

Mrs Henderson, 23 Baxter Park Terrace, Dundee, has received a letter from a companion stating that her son, Private David A. Henderson, of the third draft Australian Expeditionary Force, was killed on 20th May.

The companion states :–“Private Henderson was killed about eight o’clock at night by a shell which struck him on the head.  We were in the supports, and were preparing to enter the firing line, as an attack was expected on our position.  Dave reached out of his dug-out for his rifle when a shell burst overhead and hit him and a corporal near by, killing them both instantaneously.  We have had a rough time this week, but have succeeded in holding our position and repelling the enemy with great loss.  Our casualties were very few compared with theirs.”

Private Henderson, who was 30 years of age, enlisted at the outbreak of war and was formerly employed in Dundee by Baxter Brothers & Company, Limited, as a tenter.  He left the city over two years ago for Australia, and settled in Adelaide, where he worked in a sugar factory.

Mrs Henderson has another son, James, in the R.A.M.C.  He went through the South African War as a member of the Scots Guards.
