More about David Roberts

David Roberts was the husband of Mrs Catherine W Fairweather Roberts of 35 St Salvador Street, Dundee. He was the son of Mr David Roberts and was born in Dundee. From his Service Record it appears that, in January 1915, he joined the Royal Navy onboard HMCS Diana, a schooner bought for the Royal Canadian Navy and stationed in Halifax, Nova Scotia as the a Base Ship for the Canadian Naval College. He was entered as an Able Seaman and there is a note on his record that he had previously served in the RNVR. He arrived in Portsmouth in February 1915 and was drafted to HMS Columbine, the Base Ship at Port Edgar at South Queensferry. Shortly after joining the Columbine he went absent without leave and was sentenced to 14 days Hard Labour. He remained at South Queensferry until May 1916 during which time he would have served in Patrol Vessels or Destroyers. His next draft was to HMS Gunner, the Naval Base at Granton Harbour, Edinburgh and he served in HM Trawler Aracari from May 1916. The Aracari, a former Grimsby Trawler requisitioned in 1914, was moved to a new baseship, HMS Boadicea II at Kingstown, now Dún Laoghaire in Ireland in August 1918. David Roberts died from Influenza and was buried in the Deans Gate Cemetery, Kingstown.
