More about David Stewart

For reasons unknown this man is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour.

His service number suggests he may have been a recruit to New Army with the S prefix before the number yet he was posted to the 1st Bn in France on 1 December of 1914.  This is somewhat contradictory as he would not have had time to be sufficiently trained to be sent to France.  It seems more likely that he may previously have been or was a regular soldier of sufficient experience to be sent to France in December of 1914.  In the absence of his service record it is difficult to ascertain the accuracy or otherwise of his route
Having survived the almost complete destruction of the original BEF in 1914 the 1st Battalion BW was reinforced from UK and quickly brought up to strength and it would seem David was certainly amongst these reinforcements   Whilst no longer an entirely “Regular Army” battalion due to the number of replacements drafts now in its ranks it none the less retained a strong cadre of Regular Soldiers  They now became involved in actions in Northern France including Neuve Chapelle and it was in this area that David met his fate.   On 9 May 1915 the 1st Bn was involved heavily what has now become known as the Battle of Aubers Ridge.  Along with many other Dundonians of various regiments involved he gave his all in this very heroic but now much debated action in Northern France.
His Medal Index Card reveals that he was entitled to the usual Great War trio of British War Medal,  Victory Medal and 1915 Star,  There doesn’t appear to be any pension record for him.
