More about David Whitton
David Whitton was born in Dundee and lived in 147 Richmond, Toronto, Canada. The Cabotia was a 4,300 ton steam cargo ship completed in 1900 for the Donaldson Line of Glasgow. She was attacked on 20 October 1916 and sunk by gunfire from German submarine U-69 approximately 120 miles North-West of Tory Island, Ireland. She was en route from Montreal to Manchester with a cargo of wood pulp and a consignment of horses. The crew took to lifeboats in a storm and spent the night at sea before rescue craft appeared. Two out of four boats lowered were never seen again and 32 died. David Whitton’s name is listed on the Tower Hill Memorial in London.
