Four men from Dundee and district were lost. John Neave, Mate, Broughty Ferry; Robert Fleming, First Engineer, Arbroath Road, Dundee; D. G. Mudie, Second Engineer, Monifieth; and Edward Hendry, Third Engineer, 33 Baldovan Terrace, Dundee.
Edward Slaughter Hendry was the son of John and Annie Hendry. He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London, with other members of his crew.
DUNDEE ENGINEER ON JACONA. Above we reproduce a photo of Mr Edward Hendry, son of Mrs Hendry, 33 Baldovan Terrace, Dundee, who was employed on the steamer Jacona as an engineer. Mr Hendry is 22 years of age, and has been at sea for about two years. He served his apprenticeship in Lilybank Foundry, Dundee. The Courier, Monday, 16 August 1915, 4.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————
Edward S Hendry was the son of Mr John and Mrs Annie Hendry (nee Sturrock) of 33 Baldovan Terrace, Dundee. The 1915 Crew Lists have him serving on the SS Jacona in 1915 which was a Dundee registered steamship of 3000 tons. On route from the Tees to Montreal she hit a mine and sank 25 miles NW from Troupe Head, Scotland. The ship sank in two minutes taking most of the crew down into the depths. Thirteen men reached the surface and were clinging to wreckage when an Apprentice spotted a lifeboat which had survived the sinking. He swam towards it and brought the boat back saving the lives of the men. He was awarded the Stanhope Gold Medal. Edward Hendry’s name and those of the other twenty four who died are on the Tower Hill Memorial in London. Three local men including R W Fleming, D G Mudie and J M Neave died in the sinking but Dundee born Fireman/Trimmer D Peebles survived.
