John Shepherd 550 Black Watch
FORFAR SOLDIER KILLED IN ACTION,
AND SAD CIRCUMSTANCE ATTENDS HIS DEATH.
Intimation was received by his relatives in Forfar on Saturday that Private John Shepherd, a reservist in the 1st Battalion of the Black Watch, had been killed in action.
A sad circumstance in connection with the death of Private Shepherd is that a few days previous to the official announcement a postcard had been received by his relatives stating that he was well, and that he was leaving the trenches for an unknown destination. A parcel of tobacco, and cigarettes, etc, had been sent by his friends in Forfar to the deceased soldier, and the officer commanding, in communicating the sad intelligence of Private Shepherd’s death informed the senders that he had distributed the gifts among his comrades in the trenches. Private Shepherd was the only son of Mr William Shepherd, Gowanbank, and had served for six years in India. Before the war broke out the deceased was a postman in Forgandenny.
