Intimation has been received by Mr Andrew Blackwood, headmaster, Butterburn School, Dundee, that his son, Lance-Corporal Harry Blackwood, Scottish Rifles, has been admitted to hospital suffering from a bullet wound in the chest. Lance-Corporal Blackwood, who has been at the front for about five weeks, was formerly second master in Bathgate Academy. He is well-known in football circles, having kept goal for St Johnstone and Dundee Hibs. Lance-Corporal Blackwood’s Brother Thomas, who was a naval officer, was killed in action two years ago.

A Well-Known Sportsman Wounded. Mr Andrew Blackwood, headmaster of Butterburn Public School, Dundee, has been
informed that his son, Lance-Corporal Harry Blackwood, Scottish Rifles, is in hospital suffering from a bullet wound in the chest. Lance-Corporal Blackwood had only been about five weeks in France. Prior to enlistment he was second master in
Bathgate Academy, and was well-known in football circles, having kept goal for St Andrews University F.C., St Johnstone, and Dundee Hibs. Lance-Corporal Blackwood’s brother, Thomas, who was a naval officer, was killed in action two years ago.

Killed, Wounded, and Missing.
Lance-Corporal Harry Blackwood, Scottish Rifles, is in hospital suffering from a bullet wound in the chest. He had only been about five weeks in France. Prior to enlisting he was second master of Bathgate Academy. He is well-known in football circles, and at one time kept goal for St Johnstone Football Club.

Harry was the brother of Engineer Sub/Lt, H.M.S. Fauvette, who was killed in action 09.03.1916.

Blackwood. – At London, very suddenly, on 21st October 1945. Harry Blackwood, M.A., F.E.I.S., of 4 Sutherland Crescent, Bathgate, head master, Bathgate Public School, and beloved husband of Betsy Anderson Stewart. Funeral on Friday, 26th October, to the cemetery, Auchtermuchty, Fife. Friends wishing to attend please meet cortege at cemetery gates at 2.30 p.m.

Teacher’s Death. – Mr Harry Blackwood, M.A., headmaster of Bathgate Public School and a prominent member of the teaching profession in Scotland, died suddenly in London on Sunday, where as a representative of the E.I.S. Of Scotland, he was attending the B.B.C. Council. Mr Blackwood was a past president of the Educational Institute of Scotland, of which he was a fellow and was also a past president of the county branch. He was a native of Dundee and came to Bathgate as principal teacher of English at the Academy in 1915 and was appointed headmaster of the Public School in 1931. In savings, rose-hip collection, and other activities Mr Blackwood was particularly active, while the standard of his educational work was consistently high. Mr Blackwood was also a member of Bathgate Town Council and had just been elected to the magistracy. On Saturday he attended the opening ceremony of Bathgate Thanksgiving Savings Week. His home was at 4 Sutherland Crescent.
