More about Henry Bannerman
Remembering Gilbert Gunn Bannerman, half brother to Henry and John.
Henry and John had an elder half-brother, Gilbert Gunn Bannerman, who also served in WW1 as a Lieutenant and pilot in the RFC/RAF during the war.
Gilbert was tragically killed whilst flying his plane from Cologne to Folkestone. The plane crashed in Belgium near Namur killing Gilbert and his observer William Williamson. This was in June 1919. In 2019, one hundred years after this tragic accident a commemoration was held at the cemetery where Gilbert was buried and where the plane crashed in nearby Floreffe.
My brother Bruce, my daughter Catriona and I attended the commemorations along with the British Air Attaché in Brussels. We were invited by Bernard Serville who arranged the commemoration. Later that month I travelled to Grove Academy, Broughty Ferry from my home in Essex. It was for an evening of remembrance for all the pupils who had died during the Great War. Gilbert was a pupil at the Academy. John and Henry were pupils at Dundee High School.
