More about Ian Vernon Pyott

Ian Vernon Pyott   D.S.O.  Second-Lieutenant   Royal Flying Corps

DUNDEE OFFICER GAINS D.S.O.

Second-Lieutenant Ian Vernon Pyott, Royal Flying Corps, a native of Dundee, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Order.

The announcement is contained in a supplement to the London Gazette issued last night, and is in the following terms :____

The King has appointed temporary Second-Lieutenant Ian Vernon Pyott, Royal Flying Corps, a companion of the Distinguished Service Order, in recognition of conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in connection with the destruction of an enemy airship.

Lieutenant Pyott is a son of Mr John Pyott, managing director of Pyott Ltd., flour millers, South Africa.  Mr John Pyott is well known in Dundee, as he started his business career in the city prior to emigrating to South Africa about thirty years ago.  Lieutenant Pyott is a frequent visitor to Dundee; indeed, he spent some time in the city during the past summer.  He was also resident in this district while undergoing his training in the Corps to which he is attached.  He is an engineer to trade, and came over from South Africa to this country to join the motor machine gun corps.  In July last he obtained his commission in the Royal Flying Corps.  An elder brother also held commissioned rank in the Royal Scots, but owing to severe injuries received in action he had to resign, and is at present studying medicine at Edinburgh University.  His many Friends in Dundee and district will be glad to learn of the honour which has been conferred upon Lieutenant Pyott for his gallant action.
