More about James Findlay

James Findlay was married to Mrs Jessie Findlay (nee Harley) of 450 John Williamson Street, South Shields. He was the son of Mr Carnegie Findlay and Mrs Susan Findlay and he was born in Lochee, Dundee. In 1915, he served in the following mercantile vessels as Second Mate: SS’s Earlswood, Nettleton and Beaufront. The SS Gemma was the German ship Konigsau, seized as a Prize in 1914 and, in October 1917, was on passage from Blyth, Northumberland to London with a cargo of coal. She was torpedoed by the German submarine UB-21 off Bridlington and, although seventeen crew were saved, three others died in the sinking. James Findlay is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial in London.
