More about James Houston Grant

For reasons unknown this man is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour, but is listed on Dundee’s Morgan Academy Roll of Honour. There is also no record of this man on the C.W.G.C. James was the brother of Second Lieutenant John Mann Grant, D.C.M., 11th Battalion, Royal Scots, who died 09.04.1917.

James H Grant was the son of Mr William Grant of 14 Craighouse Avenue, Morningside, Edinburgh but was educated at the Morgan Academy in Dundee. He volunteered to join the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 21 May 1915 for service with the Hydrophone Service. He entered as a Chief Petty Officer so would have had specialist knowledge. His first position was in HMS Columbine, the shore base at South Queensferry and, in April 1916, to HMS Gunner, the Naval Base in Granton Harbour in Edinburgh. The RN Hydrophone Service was based at Granton in Edinburgh and Aberdour in Fife and experimented in different methods of detecting submarines under water. In July 1916 he was discharged to Shore as Medically Unfit. He died in September 1916 but his name does not appear in CWGC, Naval History Net or SNWM Records. He is listed on the Morgan Academy Roll of Honour and in the RNVR Medal Roll No 378.
