James died due to natural causes whilst on active service due to degeneration of the heart. For reasons unknown he is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour, but is remembered on the Arbroath Roll of Honour Book.
James is listed as having been born at Balunie, Dundee on the C.W.G.C. and the Canadian online Roll of Honour, but his attestation papers list Arbroath as his place of birth.
