John joined the Royal Naval Division on 4 May 1916. He served at H.M.S. Victory II (Shore Base, Royal Naval Division) from 5 May 1916 to 18 August 1918 and at H.M.S. Vivid III (Shore Base, Trawler Division) from 18 August 1918 to 5 February 1919.
