More about John Ireland

John Ireland was the son of Mr Thomas Ireland, 4 Kinloch Street, Dundee and the late Mrs Amelia Ireland (nee Burrie). In 1915, he served in the SS Grangemoor as a Fireman and Trimmer. In 1918 the SS Ingleside was in a convoy en route from La Goelette in Tunisia to Barrow with a cargo of iron ore. Twelve crew were lost in the sinking and John Ireland is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial in London. His ship was torpedoed by UB-70 or U-38. A U-Boat, believed to be UB-70, was sunk shortly after the attack by HMS Basilisk and USS Lydonia. This was the first and only U-Boat sunk by the US Navy in the Mediterranean during the Great War,
