More about John Mitchell Ness

John M Ness was the son of Mr William and Mrs Elspeth Ness of 29 Tay Street, Tayport and he was born in Tayport. He was serving onboard the St Ronald, a cargo ship registered in Liverpool in 1915 and may have remained onboard until she was sunk. At the end of August 1917 his ship sailed from Chesapeake Bay in Convoy HH21 to Liverpool after making a passage from Antofagasto in Chile to New York. Her destination was Liverpool with a cargo of nitrates but she was sunk by the German submarine U-82 in a position 95 miles NW of Ireland. Twenty four crew were lost in the sinking and John Ness was in that number. He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial in London.
