More about John Spalding
John Spalding was the son of Mr John and Mrs Mary Spalding and was born in Dundee. He was married to Mrs Ada Spalding (nee Bamborough) of 26 Gordon Street, South Shields. The Lonada was originally a mud hopper completed in 1912 for the Port of London Authority as Port of London Authority Hopper No. 22. In 1916 she was converted into a cargo ship and renamed Lonada. She sank after striking a mine laid by the German submarine UC-6 UC-6(Werner von Zerboni di Sposetti) approximately 5 miles North East of the Shipwash light vessel off the coast of Suffolk. She was en route from the Tyne to London with a cargo of coal. John Spalding is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial along with five other shipmates.
SS Lonada, built by Ropner & Sons, Ltd., Stockton in 1912 and owned at the time of her loss by Port of London Authority, London, was a British steamer of 1286 tons.
