More about Joseph Barrie

For reasons unknown this man is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour but is remembered on the Mains Memorial, Dundee.

Joseph Barrie   202395   Black Watch

FORFAR SOLDIER’S FATE.

Private Joseph Barrie of the Black Watch, who failed to answer the roll-call after an engagement on 31st July last year, is now presumed to have been killed on that date, his wife, who resides at 81 Queen Street, having been officially notified to that effect.  Private Barrie, who was 27 years of age and was employed as a ploughman at Hatton of Eaisie, was the last of 5 comrades who enlisted together in May, 1915.  He went on active service in October of that year, and was previously wounded in the leg in the battle of the Somme in July 1916.  He has left a widow and four young children.

Forfar Herald 12th April 1918

BARRIE―Missing since 31st July 1917, now presumed killed on or after that date, Private Joseph Barrie, Black Watch, husband of Margaret Dillon, Union Street Forfar, and third son of Mr and Mrs David Barrie, Lower Whitfield, by Dundee.
