More about Leonard G. Dunn

Leon G. Dunn   Black Watch

BROUGHTY MAN GETS FRENCH DECORATION.

Quartermaster-Sergeant Leon G. Dunn, Broughty Ferry, is amongst those who have been given the French decoration “Medaillon Militaire.”  Sergeant Dunn, who belongs to Broughty Ferry, enlisted in the 1st Battalion Black Watch at Dundee in October, 1907, and his promotion was rapid.  Within two months of his attestation, he was lance-corporal, he was promoted corporal on 24th October, 1910, and sergeant on 3d December last.  He went to France with his regiment as part of the Expeditionary Force, and, having since been promoted, he is now company-quartermaster-sergeant, which shows that his gallantry in the field has been recognised by his superior officers, as well as by the French military authorities, who have awarded him along with 150 other Britishers, the “Medaillon Militaire.”  For distinguished conduct in the battlefield from 21st to 30th August.  In the last letter home C.Q.M.S. Dunn states he was beside the colonel of the Black Watch when he was killed in action, and refers to him as the bravest man he ever saw.  The letter, dated 27th October, also states that Dunn notwithstanding the dangers and hardships he had experienced, had not received a scratch.  Dunn is the eldest son of Mr David Dunn, clerk, Caledonian Railway (Dundee West), and residing at Camperdown Street, Broughty Ferry.  A younger son ― Kenneth ― has joined Kitchener’s Army.
