More about R. H. Wishart

R Wishart was born in Dundee according to Deaths at Sea and his home address was 10 Mendalgief Road, Newport, Wales. In 1915 an R Wishart served in several ships but gave his age as 58/60 and place of birth as Forfarshire. HM Hospital Ship Glenart Castle was a 6,700 ton steam passenger/cargo ship completed in 1900 for Union-Castle Mail Steamship Co. Ltd. as Galician and renamed Glenart Castle in 1914. She was requisitioned early in the war as a hospital ship. She was sunk on 26 February 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-56 at position approximately 10 miles West of Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel. She was en route from Newport to Brest. She had survived an earlier incident on 1 March 1917 in which she struck a mine laid by UC-65 8 nautical miles from the Owers light vessel. 162 crew, medical staff and patients died in the attack with only 32 survivors.
