More about Richard Sweeney
For reasons unknown this man is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour.
Richard Sweeney 7166 Cameron Highlanders
DUNDEE BANDSMAN KILLED IN ACTION.
JOINED ARMY AT EXPRESS WISH
OF HIS DYING FATHER.
Intimation was received yesterday that Bandsman Richard Sweeney, Cameron Highlanders, youngest son of the late Bandmaster Sweeney, 3rd V.B.R.H., Dundee, had been killed in action.
Deceased, who was 23 years of age, joined the Cameron Highlanders when he was fourteen at the express wish of his dying father. His father had also been identified with the Cameron Highlanders and held the rank of band-sergeant when he retired. Richard was a cornet player, but at the front as engaged as a stretcher-bearer. His brother, Mr Alex. Sweeney, who lives at 21 Glamis Street, was anxious because of the absence of news from Richard, had made inquiries at headquarters, and the direful news came yesterday.
There are other three sons of the late bandmaster who have joined the colours. Donald (40) has served 21 years in the band of the Cameron Highlanders, and is at present engaged as an instructor at Edinburgh; John (32) answered Lord Kitchener’s call, and at Glasgow entered the ranks of the Camerons; while William (26) is a member of the 4th R.H. Alexander, too, offered his services to the 4th, but was rejected under the height standard.
