Sir Gilchrist Nevill Ogilvy Lieutenant Scots Guards
SIR GILCHRIST OGILVY, BALDOVAN
Is Killed in Action, Leading the Scots Guards.
Sir Gilchrist Nevill Ogilvy, Bart., of Inverquharity, has been killed in action. Widespread regret will be occasioned at the untimely death of the young laird of Baldovan, whose coming-of-age celebrations of last year are still fresh in the memory of his friends and tenants.
Official intimation received by Lady Ogilvy is that Sir Gilchrist was killed in action on 29th October.
Sir Gilchrist was a lieutenant in the First Scots Guards.
Sir Gilchrist went to the front early in the war.
It was in 1910 that the young Baronet succeeded his grandfather, Sir Reginald Ogilvy. The title passed on to him, his father having died some four years previously. Major A. H. Ogilvy, D.S.O., the father of the dead laird, was a gallant officer of the 13th Hussars, and fought in the Boar War. Subsequently he acted as cavalry instructor to the Sultan of Morocco, and died while in the service of the potentate in 1906. Major Ogilvy married in 1890, Isabel, daughter of the Hon Ralph Nevill, brother of the Marquess of Abergavenny, and Sir Gilchrist was their only son.
Educated at Eton, Sir Gilchrist, passed on to Sandhurst Military College, and later held a commission in the Scots Guards, with which regiment he has given his life in the service of his country.
His death is one more chapter to the family’s already long and distinguished record in the military service of the country. The heir is Mr Herbert K. Ogilvy, who is married to a daughter of Lord Elgin.
