More about Thomas Francis Cunningham

At the outbreak of war, Thomas enlisted with the 6th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders and rose through the ranks to become a Sergeant. He was commissioned in the 1st Battalion, Black Watch as 2nd Lt, 31 May 1915. Seeing much action with his regiment he was wounded in 1916, receiving wounds to both hands which required him to be returned to the UK for further treatment. Thomas was awarded the Military Cross in 1916 for “Conspicuous gallantry in action. He brought his machine gun to within thirty yards of the enemy trench, thereby enfilading the trench and assisting the infantry to advance, later he was wounded but able to control the fire of his gun.”

Prior to enlistment Thomas worked in the office of P F & J Husband, Solicitors, Dundee.
