More about William Cuthbert Crockatt
For reasons unknown this man is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour.
William enlisted in the 3rd Highland Field Ambulance 20 Sep 1914. Following training he was sent overseas. During his service, much of which was in France with the BEF, Pte Crockatt was twice wounded. Firstly on 16 March 1917 where he sustained a shrapnel wound to his hand and he was treated in his own Medical Unit, 1/3 Highland Field Ambulance RAMC(T). On the second occasion it is recorded as GSW, (Gunshot Wound), to left arm and left thigh on 17 January 1918 following which he was evacuated to UK for treatment.
Having recovered from his wounds he returned to France in July of 1918 and was posted to 2/2 Home Counties Field Ambulance RAMC . He was hospitalised again with a Duodenal Ulcer in November 1918 for which he underwent a Gastric Anterostomy. Recovery from this was challenging and ultimately he was struggling with fatigue and breathlessness thought to be Cardiac Valvular Disease and was eventually evacuated to UK on 10 March 1919 and subsequently passed away in his sleep on 11 March 1919.
It is presumed his remains were repatriated to Dundee from North Western General Hospital in Whalley as he is interred in Eastern Cemetery Dundee Section CC 6 16
