More about William Potter
For reasons unknown this man is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour.
Pte Potter is another example of a man who initially enlisted with another BW Bn with the number 2946, at this stage it is not clear which Bn but we can ascertain that it will have been either 4th or 5th Bn Black Watch and he will have been amongst the various drafts of replacements sent for both battalions after their Losses at Pietre and Bois Grenier North of La Bassee in support of that larger Battle of Loos. Potter arrives in theatre in France in December 1915 anad it would seem shortly thereafter he was included in the list of surplus which were sent to Highland Div Cyclist Depot in Rouen under Capt Edgar Boase who had been in 4th Bn BW , and where they formed a cadre for battle casualty replacements to the amalgamated 4/5 Bn BW. However this depot quickly became the depot in France from where replacements would be sent to any BW Bn who needed them. Consequently Pte Potter found himself servicing in 6 Bn BW of 51st Highland Div with the new number 6211 being allocated to him
Pte Potter made the supreme sacrifice on the battlefield at Beaumont Hamel on 13 Nov 1916 and now lies with 46 others among them 6 fellow Dundonians.

Although we know he was the son of Mr W Potter of Cherryfield lane in Dundee, his later Pension cards show his nominated NOK as his sister Lena Potter lodging with a Mrs Rose at 22 Urqhuart Street Dundee.
