Son of Mr & Mrs John McDonald of Broughty Ferry. He was a former pupil of Grove Academy, Broughty Ferry and is remembered on the schools war memorial.

OFFICER FOUND SHOT ON THE BEKESBOURNE ROAD.

A tragic occurrence took place on the Bekesbourne Road on Tuesday afternoon, when Captain Harry Alexander McDonald, of the Cyclist Battalion, 67th Division, was found lying in a ditch with a bullet wound behind his ear, and a revolver by his side. He was in an unconscious condition, and was removed with all despatch to No.1 Military Hospital, where he succumbed shortly after admission.

“Harry was born on March 5 1886 at Wallace St, Dundee, to John McDonald (Spirit Dealer) and Jessie McDonald. Harry worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland and then moved to the London office of the Royal Bank of Canada in May 1914. In August he joined the London Scottish as a private. He was present at the first battle of Ypres and was wounded on November 14 1914. He was then commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Cyclist Company, Highland Division at the Drill hall in Bell St, Dundee on August 10, 1915 and, during October 1915, was appointed Captain.”
