MONCRIEFF―Killed in action, on 26th October 1917, A.B. Robert Moncrieff, CZ/6995, R.N.D., aged 20 years, dearly beloved and only son of the late Charles Moncrieff, mason, and Mrs Moncrieff, 30 Main Street, Dundee, also by his aunt and uncle, Mr and Mrs Blyth, 7 Lawson Place, and his cousin Mrs Slimming and Janet Blyth.

Robert W Moncrieff was the son of Mr Charles Moncrieff (a Mason) and Mrs Williamina Moncrieff of 30 Main Street, Dundee. He worked in the mills and was a Beamer for W S Grant & Co, Constitution Street, Dundee. In November 1915 he volunteered to join the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve onboard HMS Unicorn in Dundee for service in the Royal Naval Division. He carried out his Initial Naval Training at the Crystal Palace in South London before being sent to Blandford Camp in Dorset for advanced military training in January 1916. He remained at Blandford until July when he was drafted to the Howe Battalion which had transferred from the Eastern Mediterranean to the Western Front in France. After a period of training at the Base Depot at Etaples he joined the battalion in August. In early November he was hospitalised but returned to the battalion to take part in the final Somme battle when the RND captured the village of Beaucourt, a first day objective on 1st July. He was with the Howe Battalion during the fighting at Miraumont in February 1917, Gavrelle in April and was killed in action at Passchendaele in October. His body was not recovered and he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial at West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. 450 Royal Naval and Royal Marine personnel are buried or remembered in this Cemetery.
