More about John Mowatt
John has no known grave but is remembered on the Arras Memorial. Formally served with the Black Watch Reg No 1944.
DUNDEE BLACK WATCH MAN FALLS IN ACTION.
The intimation of the death in action of her son Private John Mowat, Black Watch, is contained in a letter from his officer received by Mrs John Mowat, 68 James Street, Dundee. The officer writes :- “You may be relieved to know that his death was instantaneous. He suffered no pain what-ever. I, as his section officer, greatly regret his loss. He was a good soldier, and did his duty nobly. He is greatly missed by his section.” Private Mowat went to the front with his regiment in February, 1915, and was wounded at Neuve Chapelle. He was only 19 years of age, and prior to joining up was in the employment of Harry Walker & Sons, Ltd., Caldrum Works, Dundee.
