NAVAL RESERVIST KILLED IN ACTION.

Mrs Mudie, 33 Watson Street, Dundee, has been officially notified that her husband, Leading Seaman John Mudie, R.N.R., has been killed through naval action.  He was in the R.N.R., and was called up when war broke out.

Previous to the outbreak of hostilities he was resident in Glasgow, and was employed as a merchant seaman.  He leaves a widow and four children.

John F Mudie was born in Lochee and was the son of Mr James and Mrs Mary Fitzgerald Mudie of Dundee and was married to Mrs Mary Mudie of 47 Lillybank Road and, later, 33 Watson Street and 2 Middle Street, Dundee. He volunteered to join the Royal Naval Reserve at the Customs House in Dundee in April 1911. His first period of training was at the Portsmouth Naval Barracks and onboard the battleship HMS Albemarle. He worked as a Labourer at the Dundee Ship Builders Yard and at sea onboard the merchant ships SS Cameronia and Caledonia between 1912 and 1913. After mobilisation in 1914 he served onboard the Armed Merchant Cruiser HMS Kinfauns Castle and the newly built super dreadnought HMS Royal Sovereign in May 1916. In April 1917 he was drafted to HMS Stephen Furness, an Armed Boarding Vessel which was torpedoed and sunk to the West of the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea by the German submarine UB-64. Over 100 officers and men died in the sinking and John Mudie was in that number. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Southsea Common, Hampshire.
