Robert Robertson was the son of Mrs Jane McD Robertson of 185 Lochee Road, Dundee and he was employed as a Cloth Marker. In March 1915 he volunteered to join the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve onboard HMS Unicorn for service in the Royal Naval Division and carried out his initial Naval training at the Crystal Palace in South London. In June, he was transferred to Blandford Camp in Dorset for advanced military training and, in August, he was drafted to the Hawke Battalion then serving in Gallipoli. He arrived on the Peninsula at the end of August. He survived the campaign and went on to undertake garrison duties in the Aegean from January 1916. In May he sailed onboard the Franconia to Marseille to take part, with the rest of the RND, in the fighting on the Western Front in France. In August he was hospitalised with Inter Connective Tissue damage in his left thigh and buttock and went into hospital again in October and November with boils and other infections. He rejoined the Battalion in late December when it was reforming after heavy losses in November and ,in February 1917, it took part in the fighting to seize Puisieux and River Trenches near the village of Miraumont. Robert Robertson was killed in action during the River Trench fighting and was buried locally.
