The same month he was drafted to HMS Newmarket, a steam passenger and cargo ship built in 1907 for the Great Eastern Railway Company, Harwich. She was requisitioned by the Royal Navy for use a minesweeper in October 1914. In July 1917, the German submarine UC-38 torpedoed and sank her south of Icaria Island in the Aegean Sea.
