John is believed to be the father of Pte John Short 3/2558, 2nd Battalion Black Watch, who was killed in action 10.03.1915.

DUNDEE SOLDIER FOUND DEAD
IN CLOSE AT PERTH.
When proceeding to his home at 99 Leonard Street, Perth. Early this morning, Matthew Johnstone, a railway porter, made a tragic discovery.
On entering the close leading to his house he was surprised to see the figure of a man dressed in soldier’s uniform lying on the floor of the close. The man appeared to be dead.
The police were notified, and the body was removed to the mortuary, where it was examined by Dr Parker Stewart, who certified death to be due to suffocation. The man was subsequently identified by his brother as John Short (47), a private in the 3rd Black Watch, stationed at Nigg. In civilian life Short resided at 42 Horsewater Wynd, Dundee.
Last night he was in company with a number of other soldiers.
Short, who was a married man, left a widow and family. In the afternoon his wife came from Dundee to Perth and identified the body.
The deceased soldier went through the South African war, and had been serving on the Continent. He was invalided home a week or two ago suffering varicose veins, and intended returning to the front after having undergone an operation.
