More about James Mason

James Mason   D.C.M.   19367   Cyclist Corps

DUNDEE SOLDIER WINS D.C.M.

CAPTURES GUN CREW SINGLE-HANDED.

Private James Mason, Cyclist Corps, son of Mr James Mason, 26 Union Street, Dundee, has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.

In a letter to the gallant soldier’s father his platoon officer says :___” At 2.30 on the afternoon of 12th July, while I was in the front line with my boys I received orders to go ‘over the top’ and take a certain position.  Your boy was at my side all through the show, and his cool courage and absolute fearlessness were most inspiring to myself and his comrade.  We had a difficult and dangerous job to do, and even now I can picture him springing on ahead to be first in the fight.  Seeing a German machine-gun crew of six men endeavouring to bring their gun into action so as to wipe us out, he, without a second hesitation, rushed them, and single-handed effected their capture.”

Private Mason, who is 21 years of age, was serving his apprenticeship in Dens Iron Works, Arbroath, when he joined up three years ago.  He was a member of the Seaforth Club, which won the Arbroath Juvenile Cup some time ago.  Mr Mason has two other sons serving—Private William Mason, Seaforth Highlanders, who was wounded in the recent fighting, and Private George Mason, Scottish Rifles.
