More about Alexander Sutherland Docherty

Alexander S Docherty was the son of Mr James and Mrs Mary Docherty of 39 Overgate, Dundee. He was married to Mrs Christina Docherty of 23 Stevenson Street, Aberdeen. He volunteered to join the Royal Naval Reserve at the Customs House in Dundee on 29 November 1915. After training at HMS Victory, the Naval Barracks in Portsmouth, he was drafted to HMS Gunner, the Naval Base at Granton in Edinburgh in May 1916. Whilst here he would be serving in Trawlers and Drifters under Admiralty orders. At an unknown date in 1917 he was transferred to HMS Ganges, a shore base at Shotley, near Ipswich in Suffolk to carry out similar duties to those at HMS Gunner. During his Naval service he was charged with being absent from place of duty several times. HM Trawler Strymon was sunk by a mine laid by the German submarine UC-11 and ten of the crew were lost including Alexander Docherty.
