Alexander Barrie 3439   Black Watch

WORKING PARTY OF 4TH BLACK WATCH

IS SHELLED, AND TWO MEN ARE KLILLED.

AND SIX WOUNDED.

Two men of the 4th Black Watch have been killed and six wounded by the bursting of a shell.

The men who have lost their lives are—Private Alexander Barrie 18½ Princess Street, Dundee, and Private Matthew Dunn, 24 Todburn Lane, Dundee.

The men were engaged in a working party when an enemy shell dropped in their midst.  Information of the sad occurrence has reached Dundee in a letter from the officer of the platoon to which the soldiers belonged.  The officer pays a warm tribute to the late Private Barrie.

“He was my observer,” he writes, “and was an exceptionally brave fellow.  He had been with me since I came to France, and was held in very high esteem by both officers and men.  I would like his mother to know what a brave lad her son was.  Absolutely nothing would frighten him.”

The officer also mentions that he had arranged to have a little cross erected over Private Barrie’s grave.

Private Barrie, who celebrated his 19th birthday a week ago, enlisted in November, 1914.  His father died in July last, and deceased was granted a short furlough in August.  Before responding to the call of his country Private Barrie was employed by Boase & Co., Limited, Claverhouse.
