—————————————————————————————————————————-
Alfred Butchart was the brother of Miss Elizabeth Butchart of 85 South Road, Lochee and was employed as a Spinning Foreman before the war. He volunteered for the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and for service in the Royal Naval Division in April 1915. After initial Naval training at the Crystal Palace in South London he went to Blandford Camp in Dorset for advanced military training. In September 1915 he joined the Nelson Battalion in Gallipoli and took part in the last months of the campaign. He was hospitalised in late November 1915 and returned to the Battalion in early January 1916 after it had been withdrawn to the island of Mudros. In April he went on leave to Malta but on his return to Mudros he was sent, with the rest of the Nelson, to take part in the fight on the Western Front in France. Alfred Butchart survived the fighting on the Somme, Miraumont, Gavrelle and Passchendaele but was killed in action in January 1918. He was granted leave in Britain in January 1917. His body was not recovered and Alfred Butchart is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Northern France.
