Son of William and Betsy Calman of Crescent, British Columbia, his parents are listed as residing at 369 Keary St, New Westminster B.C. when he enlisted. John was killed in action at Canal du Nord, he was awarded the Military Medal posthumously on 17th June 1919.William was the brother of L/Cpl Robert McDonald Calman, 200198 of the 76th Company, Canadian Forestry Corps.

It is believed that William was possibly a divorcee or widower as his service records indicate that he had children who were put into the care of Mrs Mary K Calman of Lynden, Washington, USA, following his death.
