Was one of the first to enlist for war service during World War One, serving overseas with the 8th (Winnipeg Rifles) Battalion. While in England, married Clara Bailey. They divorced in 1926. He later married Isabella (Fraser) Moyes. They separated in 1934, divorcing in 1947. David served with the Veterans Guard of Canada from December 1940 to February 1945, based at Ozada, Alberta.
He later married Irene Donahue Lanphere, who survived him as his widow.
