He was the son of Pte Francis Smith, 141547, 4th Battalion Canadian Infantry, who was killed in action, 19.09.1916 and the brother of Pte John Leggit Smith, 690854, 52nd Battalion Canadian Infantry, who was killed in action, 29.06.1917.

According to his service record Francis originally served as a Sapper with the 55th Company Royal Engineers from 30 November 1914 till 20 January 1918, Reg No 410188 before transferring to the Canadian Army.
