More about James Chaplin Duncan
For reasons unknown James is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour.
James was a member of Arbroath Amateur Football Club, and was an enthusiastic athlete, having won many heavyweight events in local games. He belonged to the County Constabulary when he enlisted in August 1914 as a private in the Scottish Horse. He served with them as Q.M.S. at Gallipoli and on the evacuation of the Dardanelles was sent to Egypt. He was then transferred to the 10th Camerons , and fought with them at Salonika, where he was fatally wounded on the 2nd September 1917. He died on the 7th September.

Expressions of sympathy have also been sent to Mr and Mrs Duncan from other officers and men. Sergeant-Major Duncan joined the colours in the first month of the war, and fought with the Scottish Horse at Gallipoli, where he won the admiration of the officers and men by his gallantry.
Returning to this country after the evacuation of the Dardanelles he was transferred to the Camerons, and was fighting at the Salonika front when he was wounded so severely that he died shortly afterwards. Deceased was a member of the Forfarshire Constabulary, and was stationed at Balmuir, in the Parish of Mains, when he joined the Scottish Horse at the outbreak of war.
Mr and Mrs Duncan have another son with the colours, Robert, who was formerly a member of the Town House staff. He left several years ago for Canada, and came across to this country with the first Expeditionary Force.
