James was killed during an artillery bombardment on the trenches in the Souchez area. He had a brother who also served he was Pte Andrew Coventry 27465, 15th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. James listed his next of kin as Mrs Mary McDonald, Woodford, Ontario, when he enlisted. His parents were listed as residing at Cransley Farm, Invergowrie when he enlisted.
