More about James Winning

James was a former pupil of Grove Academy, Broughty Ferry and is remembered on the schools war memorial, but is not remembered on the original Dundee War Memorial. The family resided at 78 Monifieth Rd, Broughty Ferry. James brother Douglas also served, 1296, 16th Battalion, Australian Infantry as did his brother Hugh, Driver, 16113, 5th Divisional Ammunition Column, Australian Field Artillery, with both brothers returning home safely.

James Winning   1671 Australian Expeditionary Force

FORMER BROUGHTY FERRY SURVEYOR’S SON KILLED.

The relatives in Broughty Ferry of Private James Winning, of the Australian Expeditionary Force, have been informed that he has been killed in action in the Dardanelles.  Private Winning was a son of Mr Douglas Winning a former burgh surveyor of Broughty Ferry, who emigrated to the Antipodes some years ago.
