John died of wounds received during the Battle of the Somme at the age of 24 in Flanders at 2 Canadian Station Hospital, on 15 July 1916. He is buried in the Eastern Cemetery, Boulogne, France. His grave number is V111.D.120. He was awarded the Victory Medal.
