Mathew Daillie was the son of Mr William Daillie, Dundee and was married to Mrs Mary Baillie Daillie of 35 Provost Road, Dundee. His name is listed on both the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Southsea Common and the Tower Hill Memorial, London. He was serving as a Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve with seniority of 20 January 1916 when he died in August 1917. The SS Heatherside was a 2,767 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1909. She was sunk on 25 August 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-93, North-West of Cape Ortega, Northern Spain. She was en route from Newport via Milford Haven to Malta with a cargo of coal. Twenty four crew members were lost in the sinking.
