More about James Steele

James has no known grave but is remembered on the Arras Memorial. James initially enlisted in the 14th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry which was a “Bantam” battalion  created for men who were below the minimum required height for the British Infantry, James being just over 5 feet tall. in 1916 he was transferred to the 2nd Royal Scots Fusiliers and was promoted to Corporal.
